The NSF Industry-University Center for Glass Research was formed to advance the field of glass science and engineering through research, education and technology exchange driven by the cooperative efforts of academe, industry and government. CGR members represent all areas of glassmakingmanufacturers of flat glass, fiberglass, containers and specialty glass; raw materials suppliers; glass processors; refractories manufacturers; national laboratories; and other government laboratories. The CGR was established at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1985 by glass industry representatives concerned for the future of glass manufacturing and glass science to raise the level of excellence for basic, preproprietary research and secure the future of glass. As a multi-university, national research center, the CGR has established a research site for refractories for glassmaking at the University of Missouri-Rolla and a site for glass surfaces and interfaces at the Pennsylvania State University.
